Map of Butte Gardens

This information was used with permission from the Wednesday, December 24, 1997 edition of The Montana Standard entitled "Gardens Again?" written by John Stucke.

  1. Pavillion/Gardens: The pavillion would be a 35,000 square-foot building and could be used for many different functions. It would have large south-facing windows and a commanding view of the Highland Mountains. The gardens would be a nine acre area criss-crossed by walking paths so strollers could enjoy the foliage. A walkway would extend from the gardens to a fountain area near the edge of the pond.
  2. Carousel, Ferris wheel, roller coster, bi-planes: The Spirit of Columbia Gardens carousel would find a permanent home here. And while the organizers have suggested rides that were once part of the Columbia Gardens, they said the plan is open to suggestions from citizens for rides and games in the area.
  3. Picnic area/sledding hill: When polled about recreational idea to make Butte a more livable place, many residents wanted emphasis on multis-seasonal use. Organizers envision a sloping hill with sites for 40 or more picnic areas. In the winter, it could double as a sledding hill.
  4. Boating/skating pond: A 7-acre pond would be designated for boating in the summer. Outbuildings on the banks would provide rental areas and could double as warming huts for skaters in the winter.
  5. Petting zoo: The petting zoo would be in the real heavy use area for children. Reminiscent of the zoo at the early Columbia Gardens, it would mainly be an amenity for younger children.
  6. Multi-use arena: An open air arena could serve many purposes. Organizers have discussed using the area for large events such as a southwest Montana rodeo, or outdoor concerts. They hope the arena could be multi-purpose, and that citizens would offer input on how to use the facility.
  7. Belmont Senior Center: The organizers hope the gardens would become important to the senior citizens in Butte. Many seniors have vivid memories of the original Columbia Gardens. Also, there has been discussion about building a senior housing complex in the area.
  8. Walking trails/link to trail system: Walking trails throughout the area would be open for a variety of outdoor recreation - walking, running and even cross-country skiing in the winter. A fitness center in the works for the area could encourage patrons to use the trails for outdoor exercise. Organizers have suggested that the trails from the Butte Gardens could link to other green areas and parks in the city, including the Greenway project.
