Since the 15-90 began concentrating on search and rescue activities in 1963, their responsibilities in the community have regularly increased. At present these responsibilities include: the primary responsibility for all search and rescue activities in Butte-Silver Bow; secondary responsibility for search and rescue activities throughout Southwest Montana; being an integral part of the local, state, and Federal Defense Emergency System; members are unsworn auxiliary Sheriff's Officers; providing security, crowd control, and traffic assistance to the County; and finally, providing training and assistance to all age groups in wilderness survival and Emergency Medical Services.

The AAUW began in Butte as the Butte College Club in 1910. In 1930, they affiliated with AAUW on a state and national level. Our primary mission is to promote equity in education and higher education for women and girls.
Membership is open to women and men who have earned a baccalaureate or advanced college degree.
Since 1914 our organization has been providing scholarships to local students. Currently we award at least one scholarship each year to a female student at Montana Tech, University of Montana and Montana State University. We recognize top senior female math student at Butte High with a cash prize. In addition, we contribute to our Educational Foundation, which is the largest fund in the world, financing advanced degrees for women.
Historically, the club sponsored a children's theater, recorded books on tape for the blind, conducted a Career Day at Butte High and successfully lobbied for issues such as improved adoption laws and publicly funded kindergarten. Many local cahrities and causes have benefited from volunteer hours and expertise of AAUW members. Some of our current local projects are an used book sale, volunteering at the World Museum of Mining, sponsoring school board and other candidate forums, Adopt-a-Highway clean-up, Women of Montana essat contest and assisting with the Expanding Your Horizons Conference at Montana Tech.

AWARE, Inc. provides residential care for developmentally disabled adults and emotionally disturbed adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. AWARE, Inc. has group homes located in Anaconda, Butte, Missoula, Great Falls, and Bozeman. AWARE also provides case management in Eastern Montana, and children's case management in Region IV. AWARE provides transportation services to the disabled in Butte Silver Bow County.

Citizen Advocacy is a movement in which volunteers from the community are matched with an individual with a developmental disability on a one-to-one basis. Within these relationships the volunteer ( or "advocate" ) assists the person ( or "protégé" ) to live a socially well-adjusted, fully satisfying, life as close to their non-disabled peers as possible. The Advocacy Program of Southwestern Montana works to protect the rights of people while helping to meet their needs on an individual and personal basis.

The national organization operates 22 Shriners Hospitals which are committed to the treatment of orthopedic and burn and scar problems. These include treatment of curvature of the spine, brittle bone disease, hand problems, back problems, limb deficiencies, spina bifida, club foot and dislocated hip, leg length discrepancies, Legg Perthes disease and rickets. The hospitals do not accept state or federal funds. All services rendered at the hospital are at no cost to the family.

Butte Emergency Food Bank distributes food boxes to low income families and individuals from Butte Silver Bow area. Recipients are eligible for food boxes every thirty days. Twice each year Butte Emergency Food Bank organizes major food drives. The Postal Workers Food Drive is held the Saturday before Mother's Day in early May. Thompson's Food Drive is held the week following Thanksgiving in early December.

Butte Head Start offers a comprehensive pre-school program for low income three to five year old children. The enrollment requirements for Head Start are 80% low income children, 10% children with disabilities, and 10% of the enrollment can be made up of children whose families are over the income guidelines. The program provides a learning environment and experiences that help children develop socially, intellectually, environmentally, and physically.

The Butte Rescue Mission offers physical and spiritual assistance to both local and traveling people. For those in need of a warm bed or a warm meal, the Mission's door is always open.
As a Christian based organization, the Mission also offers spiritual nourishment for those who desire it. People in need of food or overnight shelter may stay up to 4 nights.
Separate space is available for single men, single women, families and couples.
The Mission is run totally with private, local donationsm and volunteer time and talents. An eight member volunteer board helps manage the finances.
This facility does require referral from the Butte - Silver Bow Police Department for overnight accommodations.

The Arts Chateau is a turn of the century mansion and art gallery. This wonderful edifice, a copy of a chateau in France, was built by Copper Baron Clark as a wedding present for his son. Butte Silver Bow County Council on Aging is located at the Belmont Senior Citizen Center. The Center provides recreational activities such as cards, games, and BINGO. Health programs include blood pressure clinics, foot clinics, and diabetic monitoring. In conjunction with Spice of Life, exercise classes will be offered for arthritis and Tai Chi. In-house insurance counseling is provided one day each week. Ceramics is offered two days each week. Meals on Wheels and congregate meals are available. The Home Chore program offers help with groceries, laundry, and errands for homebound persons. The Homemaker program provides housecleaning for senior citizens. A variety of group meetings are also held here. Note: In 1998, the Belmont Senior Citizen Center will be moving, please call for new address.

Since 1989, Butte Special Riders has provided a therapeutic horseback riding program for physically and mentally challenged children from preschool through high school. This program is conducted each summer. The aim of the nonprofit organization is to enhance the quality of life for children with handicapping conditions by providing a comprehensive recreational and therapeutic horseback riding program.

Camp Fire conducts programs that assist and empower youth and their families to deal effectively, and responsibly with contemporary issues. The Ponderosa Council of Camp Fire Boys and Girls consists of Missoula, Helena and Butte. Butte programs include community workshops, camps, and clubs. Clubs are active between September and May of each year.
In the summer and September of 1997, Camp Fire will be conducting several workshops in conjunction with the Butte Family YMCA. Volunteers are welcome to help with these workshops.

The Community Health Center provides a full range of family health services to care for persons when ill and to prevent illnesses in the future. Medical services are provided to everyone, regardless of income. Depending upon their income, patients pay between $3 and $36 for routine office visits.

Discovery House is a short-term attention home for youth between the ages of ten and eighteen who are in need of care and/or supervision. It is sponsored by the Judges Foster Home Program, Inc., a non-profit corporation that has been in operation since 1974. The goals of Discovery House are: to provide care for the needs of youth-in-crisis; to give the opportunity for the youth to deal with problems and themselves, their peers, adults, and authorities; to provide medical, psychological, and psychiatric counseling for the youth and the family if requested by the individual or by the placing agency; and to help young people work with their families and with the placing agencies to decide upon a future course of action. Discover House serves Deer Lodge, Granite, Powell, Beaverhead, Madison, and Silver Bow counties.

The mission of Highlands Hospice, modeled after the philosophy of the National Hospice Organization, is to provide support and care for people in the last stages of incurable disease so they might live as fully and comfortably as possible. While hospice is best known for its care of patients with cancer, hospice services are available to individuals with any terminal illness. No one is turned away from hospice care because of inability to pay.

Homeward Bound is a transitional homeless facility. At Homeward Bound, homeless people are afforded the opportunity to make the transition to personal and economic self-sufficiency. The Montana Association for the Blind, founded in 1946, is a private, non-profit charitable organization of blind people and their sighted friends, devoted to helping the visually handicapped in Montana. The major project of this association is the annual Summer Orientation Program for the Blind. The purpose of the Mountain View Social Development Center is to provide day services for adults over 55 years of age with developmental disabilities. The Center helps each individual to become as self-sufficient and independent in his or her environment as possible. At the Center, they enhance the health and safety of individuals. Some services available are free pregnancy testing, emotional support for women carrying babies to term, adoption infromation, and an informational library. New Hope Pregnancy Support Center's office hours are Monday 3:00-7:00 PM, Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday 3:00-5:30 PM. The 24 hour hotline number is 723-7144. Volunteers are always needed to help with the hotline.

Our Lady of the Rockies is a 90 foot statue in the likeness of Mary, Mother of Jesus, atop the Continental Divide, 8510 feet above sea level, overlooking Butte, Montana. It is a shrine dedicated to all women, especially to mothers. Information is available about the statue and the incredible generosity that made it possible. Our Lady of the Rockies offers visits to the top of the mountain during the tourist season, souvenirs, and memorials.

The Paul Clark Home / McDonald's Family Place is a "home away from home" for patients, or family members of patients, who are receiving medical treatment at local hospitals. There is no restriction on the age of the patient. The patient may be receiving either inpatient or outpatient treatment. The house provides an environment of emotional support for family members in a secure, quiet setting they can call "home".
Rangers

The Rangers is a boys' youth group (ages 10 to 18 years old) that is very involved with outdoor activities. They stress survival skills, environmental awareness, pride in Montana, and patriotism. Consideration of the land, and protection of the environment are strongly encouraged. Flag ceremonies are preformed for any interested group or club. The Rangers camp for one day each month and one week each year.

A program offering victims of domestic and sexual violence tools they need to escape the violent situation, realize the right to refuse unacceptable behavior, choose positive alternatives, recognize the intergenerational cycles of violence, and gain control of their lives.
